About This Festival
Experience the vibrant Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City, Iloilo. This cultural celebration showcases the rich traditions and heritage of the Philippines.
Historical Background
The Dinagyang Festival began in 1967 after a replica of the Santo Niño de Cebu image was brought to Iloilo City. Initially a parish celebration, it evolved into a city-wide festival. It was originally called the ‘Iloilo Ati-Atihan’ but was later renamed ‘Dinagyang’ in 1977 to create its own distinct identity. The term ‘Dinagyang’ is a Hiligaynon word for ‘revelry’ or ‘merrymaking’.
Cultural Significance
This festival is a celebration of the Ilonggos’ faith in the Santo Niño and a commemoration of the legendary arrival of Malay settlers in Panay. It is known for its highly-choreographed and energetic ‘Ati’ tribe competitions, featuring dancers in elaborate costumes and body paint. Dinagyang has been recognized as the country’s ‘Best Tourism Event’ on multiple occasions.
