About This Festival
Experience the vibrant Higantes Festival in Angono, Rizal. This cultural celebration showcases the rich traditions and heritage of the Philippines.
Historical Background
The origins of the Higantes Festival have multiple versions. One popular account suggests it began during the Spanish colonial period as a form of protest against hacienda owners. The townspeople were only allowed one festival a year, so they created giant papier-mâché figures (‘higantes’) to mock their landlords. Another account says National Artist Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco asked for the giants to be made to liven up the town fiesta. The first organized festival by the local government was in 2013.
Cultural Significance
Angono is known as the ‘Art Capital of the Philippines,’ and the Higantes Festival is a testament to the town’s artistic heritage. The giants, which can be up to 12 feet tall, are paraded on the streets in honor of San Clemente, the patron saint of fishermen. The festival is a colorful and lively celebration that showcases the town’s creativity and artistic traditions.
