TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Royal Air Philippines is suspending all flights, including the only direct connection between Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and the resort island of Boracay, next month, reports said Wednesday.
The budget airline resumed services on Caticlan, a boat ride away from the more popular Boracay, last year. The service in Taoyuan will end on Jan. 4, per CNA.
The airline blamed current problems on geopolitical factors preventing a complete recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Travel Quality Assurance Association in Taiwan said tour operators would help passengers transfer to flights via Manila or provide refunds.
Because Royal Air is the only airline to fly the route to Boracay, the association said it is also willing to assist individual travelers, but obtaining refunds from hotels on the island would be quite difficult.
The group also asked travelers to consult whether their insurance covered the situation. Travelers and travel agencies should work out an agreement on how to deal with the suspension of flights, the association said.
