Spring is just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to give up on ski season just yet. In fact, you’ve got something great to look forward to in the mountains: Bluebird days. And one new study is showing you exactly where to go to get that blast of sunshine on the slopes.
Just in case you’ve never heard the term, a bluebird day is when there isn’t a cloud in sight, the sun is shining, and the stoke is still high on the mountain. It’s the perfect time to shred in lighter layers, offering more maneuverability down the hill.
To help spring skiers and riders maximize their bluebird days, Inghams Ski analyzed more than 120 resorts across 14 countries, crunching long-term meteorological data (think average sunshine hours, elevation, snowfall, temperature, and visibility) to produce a “Bluebird Day Score” for each destination. After looking at the numbers, it found that one U.S. resort stood out from the rest: Mammoth Mountain. The California resort ranked eighth overall, which really is no surprise, considering Mammoth Lakes experiences 275 sunny days per year. That, and as Laura Mason, the head of destinations at Inghams, explained, its 11,053-foot elevation helps, too.
“When planning a ski holiday, it’s important to look beyond just price and consider factors such as mountain elevation, season of travel, and historical sunshine hours,” Mason said. “Higher-altitude destinations typically retain snow for longer, and are better positioned for clearer skies during spring. Of course, the weather can never be predicted with 100 percent certainty, but doing some research beforehand and choosing the right resort can make all the difference.”
There were, however, a few mountains that ranked higher, including Cervinia, a mountain tucked into Italy’s Aosta Valley, the No. 1 spot.
“Cervinia leads the way globally as the most reliable ski resort to deliver bluebird days this spring, thanks to its consistently clear skies and long sunshine hours throughout March and April,” the team wrote in their findings. “Located in the Aosta Valley, Cervinia is known for its high-altitude slopes and dependable snow conditions, making it an ideal choice for intermediate skiers.”
Right behind it is St. Moritz, Switzerland, which also won high praise thanks to its luxury offerings and plentiful pistes. It’s followed by Zermatt, Switzerland, Mürren, Switzerland, and Les Arcs, France, rounding out the top five.
While Switzerland and France each had four resorts in the top 15, American skiers have more to celebrate with Breckenridge, Colorado, coming in at No. 14, and Telluride, Colorado, at No. 15. So go out and chase those last few great ski days of the season. Maybe even in a t-shirt.
